‘Standard Reading’ Nos.1-3 were made by artist Nicholas Cheveldave in 2021. The zines are black and white photocopies and each page has been run through the printer 3 times to build up the ink and blur the content of the pages. The source material is from a series of 200 collages made by the artist in 2019. The original collages appropriate the aesthetic of newspaper front pages and consisted of one A4 domestic image, one newspaper title and headlines. The headlines were all collected from the Evening Standard and Metro in London during 2018-19, which Cheveldave would pick up during his commute to work. The images Cheveldave appropriated were amateur photographs of domestic spaces and objects found over the internet. When these images are collaged with random headlines, the pages create disjointed narratives, much like how commuter newspapers often dismiss objective journalism, and choose shock narratives that only aim to attract viewership and advertising endorsements.
